First Comes Love, Then Comes Marriage...

Michael and Corinne got married in the Bountiful temple on March 5, 2011.
It was a wonderful, crazy, hectic, exhausting and fabulous day!
Everything turned out great -- the Open House in West Jordan, the luncheon at Corbin's Grille and the reception at Jensen Park. They had a great turnout of guests, and it was a really fun evening for everyone.
Can't get too many pictures of the three of my boys together. What a special day for all of us to be together!
The beautiful couple -- don't they look stunning?

Congratulations Michael and Corinne! We love you so much and are so happy your wedding day turned out to be so beautiful!!!

Suicide: My Perspective

I have debated with myself about whether I should blog about this....it is a very sensitive subject. But, I feel that being truthful and talking about things is the best way to get past them. To hold everything inside and pretend that nothing is wrong does not serve anyone. So, here goes.

Seven months ago, on Septmeber 19th, 2010, my son, Jaron, attempted suicide. It was a Sunday. David and I were in Sunday School, and David had been texting Jaron to see if he was going to come home that day and have dinner with us. Jaron had told his dad that he was feeling kind of depressed and anxious that day and had taken a couple of prescription meds to help him relax. Let me say here that Jaron had been diagnosed with depression about a year earlier, and then later further diagnosed with Manic Depression.

I was feeling very nervous about Jaron driving home while on the medication. I felt like my seat was electrified, and I wanted to run out of the room and go call Jaron right then, but I didn't. As soon as Sunday School was over, David checked his phone again. There was a message from Jaron. His voice was very sluggish and his speech was slurred. He said he had taken all of his pills, and that he was sorry. He was being taken to the hospital by ambulance. He asked us not to be mad at him.

We ran through the church to find Devin, then headed towards Salt Lake. We didn't know what hospital Jaron was being taken to. I started to try to call different hospitals but couldn't remember how to work my cell phone. Finally David just called 911 and asked if they could tell him where they were taking him. We were informed they were transporting him to the U of U. The car ride to the hospital seemed to take forever. I kept yelling at David to drive faster. I was in a panic and I think in shock. We finally got there and we had to wait for almost an hour. They told us Jaron was okay and that the nurse was cleaning him up. Finally they asked me, just me, to go back.

My legs felt like wet noodles. I wasn't sure how I was able to even walk around, I felt so weak. I walked back through the emergency room to where Jaron was. As they opened the door and I saw Jaron, I was shocked that he was not cleaned up at all. He had black all over his face, chin and chest from where they made him drink charcoal in the ambulance to counteract all the pills he had taken. He face was as white as a sheet. He looked and smelled like death. People who say that taking an overdose is not really a suicide attempt have never been in the room with someone who has attempted it. It was obvious to me that he had been very close to dying.

I wanted to cry, but I think I was still in shock, and I also knew that I had to be strong for Jaron. I told him that I loved him, and I thanked him for calling 911. He said he was so sorry for all of this, and he was still pretty out of it. The nurse said she had allowed me to come back before she got him cleaned up because Jaron had assured her that I liked medical stuff and I could handle it. I wasn't sure if that was a good thing, but I was grateful that I could be there with him.

The process of stomach pumping is not a pleasant one. They don't want you back in there the next week, so I think they purposely make it very gruelling and painful. After hours of the stomach pumping and monitoring, they moved him upstairs to a room. He had many, many, many visitors come to see him that night, mostly friends from school. Jaron is very well loved by everyone who knows him.

After everything settled down a little, Jaron told me what had led up to his overdose. I won't go into too many details, but partly it was because he was having a mixed episode, where you are depressed and manic at the same time. The best way to describe it is that you are depressed and you actually have the energy to do something about it. He had never experienced this before, and did not recognize it. After days of being in this state, it seemed like the only thing he could do. Once he had made the decision, he said he felt at peace. He took all of the pills, which took quite a long time, and then he laid down on his bed and fell asleep. Then after a few minutes, he's not sure how many, he said he felt a jolt, and he woke up. He knew immediately that he did not want to die, and he called 911. He was in his apartment alone at the time, so he had to get up and unlock the door for the paramedics.

This is the part that makes me feel so thankful. First, that Jaron even woke up is a miracle in itself. Second, that he was able to speak and go unlock the door for the paramedics is another miracle. I will be eternally grateful for those two miracles for as long as I live. I am also very grateful for those medical professionals who got there so quickly and worked so hard to save my son. I can never thank them enough.

Before this happened, and I knew that Jaron was suffering from depression, I told him that I could keep him alive. I would chain myself to his side if I had to, but I would not let him die. I found out that my powers as a mom were nothing compared to God's power. I could not save him, but God could. His Savior could and did save him. I know that for sure. I thank him every day for saving Jaron's life.

I have also learned much about the power of gratitude, the power of love, the importance of strong families, and that God will see us through the things we never thought we would have the strength or be called upon to face. This was the hardest thing I have ever had to go through in my life, and I have been through some very hard things. And yet, I still feel so very thankful that we were able to make it through and come out stronger on the other side of it. It has changed me forever. That is what our trials do for us. They change our hearts, or they give us the opportunity to allow Christ to change our hearts. As painful a process as that is, these experiences turn us toward the Savior. How can I not be grateful for that?

I am not posting this to get sympathy or attention. I am telling this story so that people will become more aware of the problem of teen suicide, and maybe as we become more aware we will be more willing to help someone who is thinking about it. A good friend of mine lost her son to suicide, and she came and talked to Jaron after all this happened. I think it was a very healing experience for both of them, and I know it was for me. Jaron and I both feel that talking about it makes us stronger and better able to cope with the emotions.

I have an amazing son, and he faces his challenges with dignity and strength. I love him with all of my heart! Please feel free to leave your comments or talk to me about this in person. The more we can talk about it, the more we can understand and help.

90 Day Bucket List and Affirmations

A friend asked me the other day what my New Year's resolutions were. I had to admit that I hadn't made any. I usually make resolutions every year, and write them in my journal, but for some reason, this year, I had not. I thought about it for awhile, and realized that I would rather create some new affirmations and a new 90 day bucket list. I did both of these about a year ago, and I loved it.

Affirmations are statements about your life that you say as if they were already true. They are things you would like to see realized or achieved, even if they are not yet to that point. You write them down and keep them in a place where you will see them every day, and then you repeat them every day. Eventually, these things start to become true as you focus your energy and efforts on them. It might sound a little strange to you, but I've done it, and it really does work. Here are my affirmations for 2011:

1. I am a calm and peaceful influence on my family and all those around me.

2. I am a student of the gospel and I study it daily.

3. I make healthy choices that nourish my body and spirit.

4. I am a genuinely happy and positive person.

5. My state of well-being does not depend on how others treat me.

6. My body is strong, flexible and healthy and I grow stronger every day.

7. My comfort and self-esteem com from my God and not from other people.

8. I am of infinite worth and have a great purpose to fulfill on this earth.

9. My inner beauty matters more to me than how I look on the outside.

10. God is in control of my life, and I only control how I respond to the things that happen.

I also decided to make another 90 Day Bucket List. This is a list of 90 things that you would like to do, need to do or have always thought about doing but never got around to it. After you write your list, you have 90 days to do as many of them as you can. The last time I did this, I accomplished about half of the things on my list. It was really fun and challenging, and it forced me to do some things that took me out of my comfort zone or that I had procrastinated. My list isn't finished yet, and I have put some of the things I did not do from my first list back on my list for this time. I will share just a few of them with you:

~Learn how to make a rag quilt
~Go for a bike ride at Jensen Park
~Become better at making conversation with people
~Study the scriptures every day for at least 1 hour
~Make beautiful cupcakes
~Let someone else make all major decisions for 1 week
~Be at peace with myself, others and God
~Talk to someone I don't know
~Organize my file drawers
~Give an anonymous gift
~Simplify my beauty routine
~Create a yoga sanctuary
~Go to the temple by myself
~Laugh more
~Hike up to Ensign Peak

I guess the next item should be to finish writing my 90 day bucket list and get started on it! I am inviting everyone to embark on this 90 day journey with me. One of my good friends has decided to do it too, and I'm really excited to have someone to share my progress with. It will be so much fun if you do it too, and let me know that you're participating so we can encourage each other. It's a new year, so you might as well make a new you :)

Christmas is Love

I love Christmas trees, and I especially love my Christmas tree. It is a beautiful, fake, flocked tree with big huge lights. Some may say fake trees are not good -- to them I say...yes, they are!
I love hearing my boys play and sing on Christmas eve. And reading the scriptural account of the prophets testifying of Jesus' birth. And having pancakes for dinner. Awesome.
I love seeing stockings hung over my fireplace, and sitting by that fireplace drinking hot chocolate or herbal tea. Yes, it's a "fake" fireplace, not a real wood burning one, and I love it. No mess, no soot, just warmth and coziness.
I love seeing my boys still get excited over what gifts they might receive, even though they are so grown up and mature now.
I love seeing Christmas through the eyes of a child, or in our case, beautiful twins! The looks on their faces were priceless as they rode their toy cars and horses. So precious!
I love our new family tradition of a talent show on Christmas night. Kinsley and Jessica started us off with a cute poem.
Kyson and Bryce handed out reindeer poop to all of us, with Kyson dressed up as Rudolph. Love!
Our family did a silly rendition of "Hot Potato" by The Wiggles. We decided next year we will perform a very spiritual talent that will bring everyone to tears instead of making them wonder what planet we came from!
Nikki and Stephen read the story of the Grinch, with Jocelyn helping by playing Cindi Loo Who.
Kenny and Megan provided entertainment and a commercial break all at the same time!
Danny performed a piece he has been working on for quite some time on Guitar Hero. It was beautiful!
I love the newest addition to our little family -- our soon to be daughter, Corinne. She brings such joy and happiness to all of us. What a great blessing to have her in our lives!
I love relaxing and visiting with my family after all the presents have been opened, dinner has been cleaned up, and the so called "hustle and bustle" are over.
I love the wonder of Christmas, and all of the magic it brings to us.
I love holding the babies, feeding the babies, changing the babies, rocking the babies, playing with the babies, and everything else about the babies. They remind me of the precious Christ child, so small and innocent and full of love.

I love Christmas because if only for a short time, the world is full of peace, and we remember the greatest gift that was ever given to the world -- Love.

White Christmas and 25 Years!

This year we were so excited to go see Pioneer Theater's production of White Christmas. We weren't disappointed, the show was awesome!

It was our 25th anniversary this month, and the boys and Corinne decided to surprise us with a delicious dinner. This is what my kitchen looked like when they were done -- not too bad!
Michael made steaks, Corinne made rice, Devin made green salad, and Jaron brought Chocolate Satin pie.
Dinner was served in the formal dining room (aka living room) by romantic candle light and the lights from the tree.
Jaron was in charge of decorations for the night, and he did a terrific job! They gave us a framed picture of us on our wedding day and some lovely candles. How sweet is that?
David gave me a ring and 25 roses, 5 of them being white for each member of our family. What a wonderful 25 years it has been, and I am so thankful to have such thoughtful sons who went to all that effort for us!

Crazy Christmas Caroling

Jaron's job is working as a caroler at the Little America Hotel in Salt Lake, so we went down to hear him sing.
While we were there, Devin met Santa in the lobby and gave him his wish list.
The carolers: Jaron, Shalee, Gretchen(?), and Branndon.
The Barney boys. Aren't they cute?
Devin and Michael wanted to try caroling too, they did really well....

Lucky for us, the people at the hotel were very patient and didn't kick us out! Jaron did a great job caroling and we had tons of fun watching him. So much Christmas fun!

Giving Thanks

We were so excited to have Thanksgiving dinner at our house this year. I was happy to have all of my boys home, at least part of the day, and all of Debbie's kids except Jessica and Bryce were there as well. (They were in California with Bryce's family)
After a yummy turkey dinner, we went to a movie (our Thanksgiving tradition) and then we played some fun games for prizes. Michael beat Jaron at blowing a card off of the table in Minute to Win it. Jaron was laughing so hard that he ran out of air!
We played Pit, which got a little bit too loud for grandma, but it was seriously fun!
Devin was happy with his prize of a jar of Jelly Bellys. That's his happy face :)
Jaron won a water bottle and some popcorn. What more does a college student need?
It was fun having Corinne with us for the first time. She found out that holidays with the Barneys/Hirschis can be pretty entertaining! Nikki, Stephen and Danny also won some sweet prizes.
Kenny and Megan joined us and provided a delicious dulce de lece dessert. I probably spelled that wrong, but it was mui bueno!
My mom hates getting her picture taken, so this is what she gets for not smiling for the camera! We were so glad she was able to make the trip out to be with us! We love our little mama!
After eating a huge dinner, playing games, going to a movie, and scanning all the ads for the best black friday sales, we were all pretty exhausted. Debbie and Karl needed a little nap.

I feel extremely grateful for my family this year. I don't know what I would do without each one of them. This year has proved to be more challenging than I ever could have imagined, but with the support of our family, and the strength of our faith, we have made it through.

I was a little bit of a scrooge when the holidays came around this year. I had no desire to decorate my home or start Christmas shopping, when usually those things bring me great joy. But then I talked to a dear friend of mine who is living in a foreign country, far away from her extended family, friends, home and everything familiar to her. She only has a few decorations to put up, and only the bottom half of her Christmas tree was shipped to them. But she is making the best of it, not complaining, and has a spirit of gratitude. I realized after talking to her that my life here is good, the holidays are worth celebrating, that I am blessed beyond measure and my cup is overflowing. Today and every day, I will give thanks for all that I have. And that's a lot.
